Professional Background

Mike’s passion for helping people struggling with some aspect of their lives was ignited during his time volunteering on a telephone helpline in 1993. His direct experience of the challenges, difficulties, level of isolation, and loneliness of callers led him to decide to do more than just listen and support leading to his undertaking a Bachelor of Science in Counselling & Psychotherapy. Post-graduation, Mike founded Introspect Counselling in 2007 to actively support clients to improve their mental health and wellbeing, reduce suffering and develop skills necessary to flourish in life, relationships, work and family. In 2010, Mike joined PCI College, one of Ireland’s largest counselling and psychotherapy educational providers as a lecturer, a role which continued for 11 years, finishing his time as Senior Faculty Lecturer. In 2015, Mike became a clinical supervisor. facilitating a space for other professionals to grow and develop. Today, Mike is in full-time private practice working online and in-person with a variety of clients, supervisees and as a group supervisor, developing continuing professional development courses for therapists and supervisors, and, delivering public lectures and consultancy on a variety of mental health related topics.

As a passionate contributor to the field of counselling and psychotherapy in Ireland, Mike has had several articles published in various journals, is a published researcher on the clinical use of dreams, has spoken publicly on diverse areas such as resilience, mental health, emotional wellbeing, self-care, the business of counselling & psychotherapy and dreams. He has been an accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (IACP) since 2007 and has served on several committees in that time. Mike is the current Editor-in-Chief of the Irish Journal of Counselling & Psychotherapy and is the Republic of Ireland Representative for the International Association for the Study of Dreams.
